Job Shadowing
Eighth Grade Job Shadow Day
West Millbrook's Job Shadow Day is an optional event that provides WMMS eighth graders, who choose to participate, an opportunity to shadow a professional at their place of work for part of a workday. Activities vary from shadowing their parents to shadowing other business hosts. Observing, and sometimes helping, in the workplace often provides motivations for students to strive to reach their potential in school, and offers a critical link between education and success.
Due to WCPSS volunteer policies, WMMS staff members are not able to coordinate job placement, particularly if the person has not gone through the WCPSS volunteer background check; therefore, parents are asked to host the child at their own career location, or work within their personal and professional networks of trusted adults to find a business host that would meet one of your child's potential career interest areas. Most shadowing experiences are half-day. Parents are responsible for providing appropriate transportation to and from the job site. As with any time away from school, students will be responsible for work missed during the day. Afterwards, students will also be expected to complete evaluations of their shadowing experience.
Participation in this event is completely voluntary. School will proceed as usual on the day of the event. Students will not be counted absent because this is a school event. In order to participate, the student's parent must complete and submit this form to me in the Media Center no later than two days before the event. After submitting their paperwork, the student will be given a packet of information containing additional information and student expectations relating to WMMS Job Shadow Day.
